Sodium metabisulfite or Sodium Pyrosulfite (IUPAC spelling; Br. E. Sodium Metabisulphite or Sodium Pyrosulphite) is an inorganic compound of chemical formula Na2S2O5. The substance is sometimes referred to as Disodium Metabisulfite. It is used as a disinfectant, antioxidant, and preservative agent. When dissolved in water it forms sodium bisulfite.

Production Usage

(1) Pharmaceutical industry: for the production of chloroform, phenylsulfone and benzaldehyde. Rubber industry is used as a coagulant.

(2) Printing and dyeing industry: used as cotton dechlorinating agent after bleaching, cotton cooking agent.

(3) Leather industry: used for leather treatment, can make the leather soft, plump, tough, with waterproof, folding resistance, wear resistance and other properties.

(4) Chemical industry: used for the production of hydroxyvanillin, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, etc.

(5) Photosensitive industry: used as a developer, etc.

(6) Food industry: used as a preservative, antioxidant, flour amendments.

(7) Sodium metabisulfite is used in the reduction of gold from chloric acid (gold dissolved in royal water)
